I like figuring
things out.

I’m a final-year mechanical engineering student specialising in aerospace. I like getting stuck into a project, figuring out why something isn’t working and getting it to work.

Here’s what I’ve been working on, what went wrong along the way and what I learned from it.

A few things
I’ve worked on.

I’ve built a drone, programmed a robotic dinosaur and spent a lot of time working through simulation results. Click a project and I’ll walk you through it.

Teaching a model
some mechanics.

I used ANSYS and Python to investigate what a blade’s response could tell us about a crack, and where physical knowledge helped the predictions.

Global severity RMSE fell from 0.0412 to 0.00816, with location supplied.

My part in a group bioreactor design: the scaffold, pore sizing and how they fitted with the fluid system.

We developed a three-chamber CAD concept. I focused on the scaffold.

A dinosaur
with a curious side.

An Arduino-powered dinosaur that we built to react to its surroundings. I worked on the behaviour code and helped bring the hardware together.

A bit about me

Egypt to Malaysia.
Then Southampton.

EGYPT → MALAYSIA → UK

I’m Youssef. I grew up in Egypt, studied my first two years at Southampton’s Malaysia campus, and moved to the UK campus in September 2025.

I’m now finishing my MEng in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in aerospace. I enjoy the hands-on side as much as the analysis. Getting something to work is satisfying, but I also want to understand why it works.

Outside engineering, I swim and play university water polo. I also really enjoy cooking, so there’s usually something else I’m trying when I’m away from my laptop.

Something I started in Malaysia.

I started Senior Spark at Southampton Malaysia, a mentorship programme with over 40 students in its first run. I organised the matching and communication, as well as the events and certificates.

Teaching before university.

Before university, I worked as a freelance A-level and IGCSE maths and biology tutor in Alexandria. I taught over 15 students and handled the lesson planning, progress tracking and scheduling myself.
